Top 10 Vasectomy Questions and Answers

What men - and their partners - want to know. Here is a checklist of some of the most frequently asked questions (in no specific order) and the answers that Dr. Benderev provides.

1. Q. It seems to me that cutting anything down there will make me less of a man, don't you think?
A. No. Getting a vasectomy won't affect male hormones and shouldn't affect sexual function or pleasure. In fact, many men report increased pleasure, because of the freedom to have sex without protection such as a condom.
2. Q. How much will my sex life change after a vasectomy?
A. After having a lab test of your semen, when the doctor declares you sterile, you can enjoy a freer sex life
because you won't be worried about unwanted pregnancy. However, a vasectomy does not prevent venereal
diseases.
3. Q. My wife and I don't agree. She thinks I should get this procedure done, and I would rather she be
the one to get surgery. What's the best choice?

A. Every couple is different and has to make the decision that is right for them. It's important to
know that vasectomy is less complicated and cheaper than the corresponding surgery for women, the tubal ligation. Most importantly, it is much safer than a tubal ligation.
4. Q. It really doesn't hurt?
A. What one usually feels in a "no needle, no scalpel vasectomy" is on par with the small flick of a rubber band, and many men report that it is completely pain-free.
5. Q. How effective is this procedure compared to a traditional vasectomy?
A. The same. A lack of pain doesn't mean a worse outcome
6. Q. Will I need to shave the area? I don't like that idea.
A. It's likely your doctor may ask you to; you could also just clip the hair rather than shave. Talk to him or her to find out what is necessary for you.
7. Q. How long does the procedure take?
A. In the hands of experienced surgeon, once the preparations have been made, the procedure itself usually takes less than 10 minutes.
8. Q. How long is the recovery time?
A. Your doctor will give you complete instructions. You should count on also resting for a couple of days, avoiding exercise and heavy lifting for a week, as well as sexual activity for a week.
9. Q. How long should I wait to have intercourse?
A. You can have intercourse after one week, but you should continue using another method of birth control until the doctor declares you sterile, after reviewing your semen test. These tests must wait at least 6 to 12 weeks after the procedure.
10. Q. What if I change my mind later?
A. Many times, vasectomy can be surgically reversed. Although this is possible, you shouldn't count on it. If you think you might change your mind later, you should choose a different form of birth control.

Bonus Question

  Q. Is the procedure guaranteed 100% effective?
A.
No. On rare occasions (generally less than 1/1000 cases), sperm may find their way across the two ends of the vas deferens, which explains the importance of semen inspection after the procedure.
If you have additional questions that are unanswered or would like to discuss the procedure, you can make an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Benderev who will be glad to answer all your concerns.
